Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the expectations and perceptions of educational, social, and emotional support shared by participants including child patients, their parents, educational volunteers, and pediatric intern. We would like to find out what characteristics of hospital school programs are needed for child patients. For this purpose, we observed
the educational service activities at hospital school in Seoul. In addition, we interviewed one child patient, one mother, one educational volunteer, and one pediatric intern using the method prescribed by Spradely(1980). First, inconsistent perceptions of educational, social and emotional support of them have proved to be difficult factors for hospital school program operations. Second, they were expecting a role for social and emotional support as well as educational support for hospital school. However, the actual perceptions of the social and emotional supports constituted through their experiences were not consistent. This refers to the fact that participants had to accept that the hospital school is home to unique educational, social, and emotional interactions unlike general schools. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of micro system involving educational, social, and emotional support rather than the reformation of macro system including the educational curriculum, that would effectively support children's learning rights and psychosocial adjustment.
